Tinos is well known for the Greek-orthodox pilgrimage of the icon of Virgin Mary and is generally accepted by the Greeks as the "holly island". The coexistence of two different religious communities in the island, the Greek-orthodox and the Catholics, is totally unknown for a big part of the Greek population and uninteresting or even problematic for some people. This book presents the historical march of the Catholic community through time in order to revoke the before mentioned established prejudices. In parallel, this book also presents the current Catholic community, while every point that presents its identity leads us in understanding the attitude of the Greek-orthodox community against it.
The capability of coexistence of two different religious communities in such a restricted geographical space and through a great period of time, shows the ability of the communities to choose themselves and to balance life and death, love and violence by setting as their target the continuous progress. The sociological study of the Catholic community of Tinos does not end in itself. Of course, it seeks to record a social phenomenon and the presentation of the coexistence of the Catholics and Orthodox in Tinos, but essentially it aims to add a documented scientific aspect to the conversation about the several forms of social exclusions.
